Job Title: Planning Policy Manager
Location: East London (Hybrid Working Available)
Rate: £500 per day (Umbrella)
A London Local Authority is seeking a Planning Policy Manager to lead their Local Plan through examination. This is a pivotal role at a critical stage in the plan-making process, reporting directly to the Director of Planning and Development.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the Local Plan through its Examination in Public (EiP).
- Strategically manage the most challenging aspect of the plan – a high affordable housing target – balancing technical robustness with political sensitivity.
- Work closely with the Planning Inspector, preparing for and responding to proposed main modifications.
- Engage with key political stakeholders, including the Mayor and portfolio holders, to communicate and justify proposed changes to the plan.
- Provide expert leadership to the planning policy team and coordinate cross-departmental input as required.
About You:
To be successful in this role, you will need to demonstrate:
- Extensive EIP Experience – Proven track record of successfully managing a Local Plan through examination.
- Strong Political Awareness – Ability to navigate complex political environments and present issues clearly to senior stakeholders.
- Planning Expertise – A qualified Town Planner (MRTPI or equivalent) with a deep understanding of policy development and implementation.
- Leadership – Experience leading policy teams and managing high-pressure projects in local government.
