We are seeking to recruit a strong team player and multitasker to join us in the role of Electrical Design Engineer based at our offices in Cardiff.

The Engineering Design Team  prepare  electrical, protection/control, mechanical and civil designs for schemes to construct, extend or modify electricity substations energised at up to 132kV. The team assists network design colleagues with the assessment of substation options and develops selected schemes from a broad engineering brief into a fully specified build package. The team also has responsibility for the preparation, issue and archival of protection relay configurations and settings at up to 132kV

The broader ED Team comprises 75 design staff, primarily based at offices in Tipton, Pegasus, Avonbank and Cardiff.  It handles in excess of 500 active design commissions at any time ranging in capital value from £50k to £10m.

* Depending on experience, you may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

Main ResponsibilitiesIt is imperative that the successful candidate is able to hit the ground running in the following areas:


Acting as lead designer for substation design outputs up to 132kV.
Providing design outputs for Primary Plant Equipment Specifications, Site Primary Layout, and Primary Electrical Designs relating to AIS Designs, Indoor Switchgear Design, and associated ancillary equipment and substation design applications.
Primary Plant/Layout Design alignment into Substation Civil/Structural Design interfaces & outputs.
Experience of substation plant ranging from Switchgear (outdoor AIS and indoor switchboards), Grid & Primary transformers, auxiliary transformers, power cabling, substation earthing design, compound lighting, civil/structural interfaces, switchroom M&E design packages.
Preparation of Primary Design drawings and review of junior team member design outputs.
Assessing and clearly communicating the broader benefits and drawbacks of design options.
Evaluating, recording and communicating key design decisions/ changes (and the logic behind these decisions/ changes) for the benefit of all project stakeholders
Authorship of design briefs and equipment specifications in line with company policies and plant standards.
Technical briefing of colleagues, where required at key project stages
Within team having the abilities to handle concurrent project design commissions.
Provision of specialist substation engineering advice to project stakeholders Understanding of modern protection and control relay application to scheme application and design.
Experienced in protection and control scheme design relating to 11kV to 132kV distribution substation applications.
Ability to determine scheme scope from concept through to design delivery, covering scheme application, protection & control panel scheme design, and full secondary interfacing package delivery.

The Ideal CandidateYou will be an experienced design engineer with demonstrable substation primary design experience at Distribution or Transmission level as well as proficiency in the use of AutoCAD.

The successful candidate will be qualified to HNC level or above, in an appropriate engineering discipline - evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment.

Good communication skills are essential, as is the ability to manage multiple diverse projects simultaneously.

Applicants should hold a full UK driving license.

As part of our hybrid working approach this role offers a mix of office and home working, usually 3 days in the office and 2 days from home.  Hybrid working can only be considered once your initial training is complete and subject to business need.

This role is subject to a satisfactory Barring Service (DBS) check.  Depending on the role, different levels of screening and vetting are required. Some roles require a triannual check.
