As a Military Police Typist at Merville Barracks, Circular Road South, Colchester You'll will be providing the Defence Serious Crimes Unit with precise and accurate typing support in the transcription of handwritten original statements and verbal/visual interviews on tape/disk, recorded by Investigation Officers in the course of an investigation and contribute to the efficient running of the admin office by being flexible to the needs of the unit. You're the one with the skills to ensure behind the scenes of facilities run like clockwork and ensure your managers feel supported. The role can also demand a requirement for prolonged and intense concentration and typing at speed with a high level of accuracy when transcribing interviews.

What you’ll do:



Type from handwritten, personal statements onto customised electronic proforma.


Transcribe from Policy audio/visual interviews recorded on disk/tape, onto electronic customised proforma interview forms.


Provide assistance to the Administrator for any duties within the Unit and deputising in their absence to ensure the Unit continues to function effectively, which includes:



Opening/recording and distribution all incoming mail and addressing/recording outgaining mail, including special delivery, etc.


Photocopying and collating police bulletins, i.e., Inreps, Progress Reports, Final Reports, additional evidence, etc., for distribution to designated agencies and emailing those on military networks to inform of progress of investigations.


Ordering station to provide continuation of availability, whilst keeping within budget


Photocopying and binding of colour police Evidential Photographic Supplements when required to assist in case distribution timelines.


Answering telephone enquiries and accurately relaying messages when investigators are out of office or otherwise engaged, to ensure they are kept informed of any developments in their investigations.


Using non-specialist office machinery, such as photocopiers, etc., in order to ensure the efficient running of the office.


Any other administrative tasks as detailed



What you bring:

Essential



RSA Level III or Civil Service equivalent typing speed test. Audio typing qualification or experience would be beneficial or as a minimum be willing to undertake necessary training on specific role-related equipment.

Experience of advanced word processing.
Good grammar and spelling ability.
Ability to work in a closely knit small team.
Ability to prioritise workload when working under pressure.
Experience in dealing with highly confidential and sensitive information, including photographic material.
Polite telephone manner and helpful attitude to colleagues.


Desirable


A mature outlook and sensitivity in dealing with confidential matters dealt with by the Unit.
Good knowledge of military terms and abbreviations.
