The Health Improvement Service aims to improve health and well- being and address health inequalities for the people of Bath & North East Somerset.  The service comprises of a Health Improvement Specialist Service, a Healthy Lifestyle Service and a Resource Centre.                                                                                                                            

The Healthy Lifestyle Service offers FREE support and advice to service users and professionals, helping people to access services which enable them to lead a healthier lifestyle typically through 1-2-1 and group interventions. The Health Improvement Service takes a strategic approach focusing on a number of areas including smoking cessation and tobacco control, weight management interventions for families and young people, diabetes education, screening and immunisation and the NHS health checks programme.                  

We are seeking a Health Improvement Practitioner who will specialise in delivering community smoking cessation interventions in a 1-2-1 and group capacity throughout Bath and North East Somerset.  This role also includes supporting the Healthy Lifestyle Service Lead with the planning and implementation of the strategic Tobacco Control plan.  The role further requires someone who has the ability to work across multiple health Improvement programmes when required to do so to deliver weight management and other health related interventions, which they would be trained to deliver.

This is a part-time position working 30 hours across the week - usually 4 days with some evening and weekend work required. based at our Peasedown St John location.

Main ResponsibilitiesAs a Health Improvement Practitioner you will:



Manage a caseload of clients needing motivational support for health and well-being improvements.


Provide individual and group support primarily for smoking cessation, but also for weight loss, increased physical activity, and improved cooking skills.


Contribute to the Healthy Lifestyle Service in various settings, including community, primary care, pharmacies, dentists, and workplaces.


Raise awareness and increase referrals to the Healthy Lifestyle Service through information sessions, events, marketing, social media, and the Virgin Care Marketing team.


Engage with individuals and communities from target groups to improve their health and well-being.


Use motivational interviewing and behavior change techniques to help service users achieve sustainable health goals.


Design and distribute resources to increase awareness and knowledge of local health improvement initiatives and services.


Work under the Healthy Lifestyle Manager/Stop Smoking Service Lead, mainly in Peasedown St John and the BANES area.

The Ideal Candidate
Degree or equivalent in public health, food and health, or a related area with extensive experience in health improvement.
Experienced in partnership working with external agencies and organizations, and in working with vulnerable groups.
Knowledgeable in health improvement and patient/public involvement in service development.
Able to work independently, manage a varied caseload, and meet targets within a dynamic team.
Must have a full UK driving licence and access to a car for work purposes
